FamilySearch

Posted on May 21, 2023 by Thrifty Kristin

Ancestry.com but for free

FamilySearch is what I would consider to be a combination of WikiTree and Ancestry.com.  Like WikiTree, FamilySearch is based on collaboration and a one tree mentality but it has databases of records and materials that can be searched, just like Ancestry.com.

You will need to create a FREE account in order to search FS’s records but it is simple to do so and the benefits are extraordinary. For instance many of the same records that Ancestry.com has, are also on FS. FS also has international records and allows members to search those for free as well, unlike Ancestry.com where you might have to go up a subscription level in order to even view the index.

You will also be able to search FamilySearch’s collections of digitized genealogy books. Some of the books are restricted access, due to copyright but they can be viewed at a FamilySearch Center. To find a FamilySearch Center or FamilySearch Affiliate near you click the button below.
